Peony

nyone who knows me understands how much I love gardens. I also keep honey bees, so these days many of my flowers are smaller and more insect friendly. However, there has always been a place in my borders reserved for peonies.
I’m irresistibly drawn to these flamboyant and theatrical blooms and at the same time infuriated by their ephemeral and fleeting habit.
As a youngster I watched my father nurture a row of these plants year after year. Their enormous magenta blooms would come into bud then, within what seemed like a heartbeat, bloom and disintegrate. I could never quite work out why he bothered, that was until I got my own garden. Gardening teaches you patience, and nature gives you perspective, and of course as an adult you realise that the reward is in the whole growing process not just the finish; having said that, for me peonies do continue to be a bit of a challenge.

I always said I would avoid “flowery” scarf designs because these were readily available elsewhere. In hindsight, and bearing in mind how big a part flowers play in my life, this was never realistic.
Originally native to Asia, Southern Europe and Western North America, their popularity is now widespread. Often referred to as the “King of flowers” and the “flower of riches and honour” I couldn’t resist the opportunity to extend the life of my pink peonies by immortalising them on silk.
