The Childwick Bees

Kept on the private estate of Childwickbury, St Albans, my bees are sustainably kept, and treatment free, living in harmony with, and not at the expense of other regional pollinators. I am not a bee farmer, so wax is collected only as a by-product of the honey extraction process and through general waste. This means the amount available varies each year and is limited. At the end of the honey producing season this wax is melted and filtered through muslin leaving traces of the valuable propolis that gives wax it’s variety of colour. “Treatment free” means no added chemical build up.

Wax

The production of wax comes at great cost to the colony because they must consume 8 lbs to 10 lbs of their
precious honey to make just 1 lb of wax. If you imagine that it takes 1 bee, 6 weeks to produce 1 teaspoon of honey, you start to understand that cost to a colony
